What is Transitional Kindergarten and is my child eligible?

Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is an early year kindergarten experience for children turning 4-years-old by September 1, 2025. Transitional Kindergarten gives our youngest kindergartners an early start and provides them with the opportunity to learn and grow in an environment tailored to meet their academic and social-emotional needs.

Parents of children who will turn 4-years-old on or after September 2, 2025 are eligible for Preschool and cannot enter TK. The District offers both tuition-based and income qualifying Preschool options. For questions please contact Amy Shultz at [email protected] or call 714-990-7581. Note: There will be limited enrollment in TK for students who are eligible for Kindergarten. With the expansion of TK, decisions will be made on space availability. Final decisions will be made in the Summer of 2025.

When is my child eligible for Kindergarten?

To enroll in Kindergarten your child must be 5-years-old by September 1, 2025.

What are the immunization requirements for Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten enrollment?

California law requires all students enrolling in Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten to be current on state-mandated immunizations before attending school. Parents/guardians must provide proof of immunization records as part of the enrollment process. Click the link below to be directed to our immunization requirements.

My child is not yet old enough for some required immunizations. Can I still begin the enrollment process?

Yes. Parents/guardians should begin enrollment and submit all required documentation, even if their child has upcoming immunization appointments. Proof of immunization must be provided before the child starts school. Families should work with their healthcare provider to ensure all required vaccines are completed on schedule.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions:

Transitional Kindergarten Enrollment & Overflow Plans

Brea Olinda Unified School District is committed to providing high-quality early learning opportunities for our youngest students. Due to limited enrollment capacity at some of our elementary schools, families applying for Transitional Kindergarten (TK) should be aware that placement at their neighborhood school is not guaranteed.

If a school reaches its TK enrollment capacity, students may be assigned to an alternate school site, where additional TK classes are available. Our goal is to ensure every child has access to a nurturing and enriching learning environment. Families affected by overflow placement will be notified as early as possible and supported throughout the transition process. They will have a right to return to their school of residence when space becomes available.

For questions about TK enrollment and placement, please contact BOUSD or your school principal.
