Brea Olinda Unified School District Appoints Cary L. Johnson, Ed.D. as Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services

Brea Olinda Unified School District has selected Dr. Cary L. Johnson to serve as the new assistant superintendent of Educational Services. The Board of Education took formal action to appoint Dr. Johnson during the Feb. 20 Board of Education meeting. 

 

Dr. Johnson arrives at BOUSD with nearly two decades of experience in TK-12 administration with his most recent position serving as an assistant superintendent of K-12 Curriculum and Instruction at a nearby school district. Among his professional highlights, Dr. Johnson has led the development and implementation of several programs and initiatives, including transitional kindergarten programs across 32 elementary schools, revision of K-8 math pathways to ensure students have greater access to rigorous courses, implemented the California College Guidance Initiative which included implementation of a homegrown iCan STEM lab at K-5 sites, and led the adoption of culturally proficient K-12 novels to diversify voices in literature. His leadership also helped his last school district earn the prestigious Golden Bell Award for two K-12 language immersion programs.

Johnson’s leadership in previous roles also helped his district secure nearly $15 million in grants, including the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement grant, the California Career Pathway grant; round one and two, the CTE Incentive grant, the Specialized Secondary Program grants, the CTE Teach grant, and the Verizon Project Lead the Way grant.

Johnson holds a long list of credentials including a single subject teaching credential from Chapman University, a clear administrative services credential from Cal State Bakersfield, a bachelor’s degree in international relations from UC Davis, and a Master of Arts in International Political Economy from Claremont Graduate University. He earned a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from California State University.
