BOUSD Schools Shine in California PBIS Recognitions

In a remarkable achievement, nine schools from the Brea Olinda Unified School District (BOUSD) have been recognized for the 2023-2024 school year for their outstanding efforts in implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) with six schools making improvements over the previous year. The California PBIS Coalition recently awarded a range of honors to these schools, reflecting their commitment to fostering positive school environments, enhancing student outcomes, and promoting equitable and inclusive practices.

PBIS is a framework designed to improve the behavioral and academic outcomes of students by providing consistent, positive reinforcement and support. Schools are recognized at different levels—Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze—based on the depth and fidelity of their PBIS implementation, as well as their success in using data to improve student behavior and engagement.

Platinum Awards

The highest level of recognition, the Platinum Award, was earned by three schools in the district:

  • Brea Canyon High School
  • Falcon Academy
  • Laurel Elementary Magnet School

These schools have demonstrated exemplary PBIS practices, going above and beyond in creating a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for all students. Their dedication to embedding PBIS strategies at every level of their operations highlights their commitment to continuous improvement and student success.

Gold Awards

Three more BOUSD schools earned the prestigious Gold Award, which signifies strong PBIS implementation with measurable positive impacts on student behavior and school climate:

  • Arovista Elementary School
  • Brea Country Hills Elementary School
  • Mariposa Elementary School

These schools have shown they are consistently applying PBIS strategies, which are positively influencing both academic and behavioral outcomes across their campuses.

Silver Awards

Two schools earned the Silver Award for their success in implementing effective PBIS strategies that have improved the overall school climate:

  • Olinda Elementary School
  • Brea Olinda High School

The Silver Award recognizes schools that have made significant progress in their PBIS efforts and are well on their way to achieving even higher levels of student support and engagement.

Bronze Award

Finally, Brea Junior High School received a Bronze Award, reflecting its solid foundation in PBIS practices and a commitment to continued improvement.

The success of these nine schools is a testament to BOUSD's dedication to creating positive and inclusive school environments that prioritize student well-being. The district has prioritized implementing PBIS as a cornerstone of its educational approach, and these awards highlight the hard work of educators, staff, students, and families in making PBIS a success.

"These recognitions affirm our district's dedication to fostering environments where students feel safe, respected, and ready to learn," said Superintendent Brinda Leon. "I am incredibly proud of our schools' efforts and the positive impact they are having on our students."

As BOUSD continues to prioritize PBIS, the district looks forward to even greater strides in enhancing the learning experience for every student. The recognition of these nine schools underscores the district’s leadership in promoting effective behavioral strategies that lead to lasting academic and social success.
